“Why do I need coaching?”
“It’s deflecting from the issues and making me the problem.”
I’m no fan of language that makes an individual the problem. And yet that is often how many people start a conversation with me. They’ve been told it will be helpful. They’ve been advised they need it. They’ve been told their job is in jeopardy if they don’t make it work.
Your autonomy is at rock bottom, and yet another person is brought into the equation. And here’s someone else who knows better than you what’s wrong and how to put it right?
Resistant and sceptical. Who wouldn’t be?
Here’s what I know:
Coaching is making time and space to think
Coaching is sense-making in the presence of another person
Coaching is investigating your ideas without fear of judgement
Coaching is exploring different perspectives with freedom and curiosity
Coaching is mapping alternative solutions flexible to challenge and change
Coaching is holding yourself to account with honesty
Coaching is the journey, not the destination.
Oh, you’ll reach your objectives, your goals. But what those are and how you get there, will be entirely of your own making, in your own way
With your own tools
With your own skills
With your own strengths
Coaching is a purposeful conversation, where someone is walking beside you for a while.
Unique solutions for unique challenges, because to thrive personally and align professionally we need to be the authors of our own narrative.
It’s messy. It’s challenging. It’s change. It’s coaching.
